Valentines Day

Valentine's day is celebrated on February 14. It originated as a Roman holiday to honor the feast of Lupercalia in mid-February, which was dedicated to Faunus, god of fertility and vegetation. The Lupercalia were so named because the Romans believed that the goddess Venus had once been born among the shepherds who tilled the land around Rome's Lupercal cave.

The festival included the sacrifice of goats and ram as well as the running of the goat snares through the streets of Rome。 There are similar customs throughout Europe today, particularly around Valentine’s Day。 They include the giving of flowers, cards and chocolates——all associated with romantic love。 In France, for example, it is tradition for women to give men flowers on February 14; on March 1, it is the reverse。

In 537 A.D., Pope Gelasius declared February 14 to be St. Valentinus‘ day of celebration “in order to make amends for the sinful lewdness that lurks in human hearts.” He urged young people, especially, not to forget their “vows of chastity”——an early form of Valentine's Day.

As time went by other religious celebrations took place on or near this date, including All Saint's Day (November 1), Remembrance Day (November 11), Thanksgiving (the fourth Thursday in November) and Christmas (December 25). But none of these supplanted Valentine's Day, which remained the most popular of all festivals.

2. 英国情人節--St. Valentine's Day

For centuries England has celebrated Valentine's Day on February 14. This custom likely began when King Henry V enacted a law that required courts to sit on February 14, thus allowing lovers to seek justice should they become wronged by their beloveds. Other European traditions also began to surface over the years, such as exchanging gifts and greeting cards.

However, despite the presence of these new traditions, some things never change. In present-day Britain, Valentine's Day is still celebrated much like it has been since
